Standards for Registration

1. Registrants in the Register of Educational Psychologists held by the Hong Kong Association of Educational Psychologists Limited (HKAEP), also referred to as HKAEP members; demonstrate an acceptable standard of professional skills and competencies based on a defined body of knowledge in educational psychology.
2. HKAEP members meet the educational and training standards set by the HKAEP.
3. HKAEP members apply professional knowledge and skills in the practice of the educational psychology profession in accordance with the Scope of Practice for Educational Psychologists in Hong Kong.
4. HKAEP members adhere to the Code of Professional Conduct for Educational Psychologists in Hong Kong which provides guidance and rules for the performance of professional responsibilities.
5. HKAEP members participate in continuing professional education to keep abreast of knowledge and developments in the profession.
6. HKAEP members acquire appropriate indemnity cover/professional liability insurance for their practice.
7. HKAEP members make a declaration of no criminal convictions.
8. HKAEP members maintain open communication with service users about their services, such as providing service users with clear information necessary for making informed decisions, informing service users about the complaints processes of the HKAEP, and adhering to the principles and rules governing the practice of advertising outlined in the Code of Professional Conduct for Educational Psychologists in Hong Kong.
9. HKAEP members promote and engage in inter-professional and multidisciplinary collaboration to assure a safe and effective practice of the profession.

Educational and Training Requirements for HKAEP Membership:

Applicants who meet the following conditions set forth in paragraphs (1) and (2) are considered to be eligible for membership of the Hong Kong Association of Educational Psychologists Limited (HKAEP). For details, see Educational and Training Requirements for HKAEP Membership.

1. hold an undergraduate degree in Psychology or its equivalence acceptable to the HKAEP Professional Council (“the Council”) andApplicants shall have satisfied the Council one of the following conditions:
   1. a bachelor degree from an institution recognized by the Council with a minimum of second lower honours level or a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (on 4.0 GPA scale) with psychology as the major subject and taking no less than eight courses in different areas of psychology covering at least Research Methods in Psychology and 5 out of the 6 following fundamental areas:
      1. Biological / Physiological Psychology,
      2. Developmental /Child Psychology,
      3. Cognitive Psychology /Perception /Learning /Memory,
      4. Personality /Individual Differences,
      5. Social Psychology, and
      6. History of Psychology/Contemporary Issues in Psychology; or
   2. a postgraduate qualification in psychology from an institution recognized by the Council covering the courses and fundamental areas of psychology as specified in (i) above; or
   3. such other qualification in psychology as the Council shall approve.

   Remarks: The completion of an independent research project in psychology, or an advanced, seminar-based course in psychology from the above bachelor or postgraduate degrees could be considered as fulfilling the area of “History of Psychology / Contemporary Issues in Psychology”.

2. hold a Master’s or Doctoral degree in educational/school psychology acceptable to the Council (see Educational and Training Requirements for HKAEP Membership Appendix 1 & 2)
